How to Introduce a New Toy to a Cautious Pet
A low-pressure way to introduce unfamiliar toys to cautious dogs and cats.
Some pets immediately investigate a new toy; others prefer distance. Allowing choice usually creates a calmer introduction than placing the object directly against the pet.
Start at a distance
Place the toy in a familiar room and let your pet approach voluntarily. Avoid shaking, activating or moving it suddenly if your pet appears uncertain.
Use familiar routines
You can place the toy near an existing play area or pair calm investigation with praise or a familiar reward.
Inspect the toy before use and supervise until you know how your pet interacts with it. Remove it if it becomes damaged.
