A scratching post is most useful when it matches how your cat prefers to scratch. Some cats stretch vertically, while others prefer horizontal or angled surfaces.
Stability matters
A post that wobbles can be less appealing. Choose a base and construction that stay stable during full-body scratching.
Place it where scratching happens
Try positioning a scratcher near sleeping areas, doorways or furniture your cat already targets. Providing an acceptable alternative close to the preferred location can make it easier to use.
Replace heavily damaged scratching materials when loose pieces could become unsafe.
