Regular maintenance is easier than trying to correct a neglected aquarium all at once. A consistent routine helps you notice changes in water appearance, equipment and fish behaviour early.
Check equipment and water
Confirm that the filter, heater and other equipment are operating as intended. Follow appropriate water-testing guidance for your aquarium and livestock.
Clean without over-cleaning
Remove visible debris, clean viewing surfaces and perform water changes appropriate to the aquarium. Avoid replacing or aggressively cleaning all filter media at the same time unless the manufacturer's instructions require it.
Water chemistry and fish health can be species-specific. Seek qualified aquarium or veterinary advice when fish show signs of illness or distress.
